Narcissistic Girlfriend - John Charles
This is not the typical music video one would expect for a song of this nature. A beautiful woman looking at herself in the mirror? That would be too obvious plus there are other sides to it. In this film the Girlfriend aspect is now an all-inclusive non gender based idea. The Narcissism remains the same. That was the gift of the song all along. We do know that men want to be acknowledged and women want to feel secure, that’s all we have to remember about that. Relationships are always work, it never ends. How a man sees a woman is one thing and vice versa but let’s look at it from a different angle.
Now the song could be titled Narcissistic People, Narcissistic World or how about Narcissistic Me? I could have even written the poem about myself. You have all heard the expression “It takes one to know one.” I am all for self-help and correction but whether I act on it or not is another matter altogether and of course up to me. It is quite possible I attempted to act it out in the poem. I don’t think we ever got out of the Me Generation and are living in it still today! We have been since the beginning of mankind. It may have just been called something different back then. Nonetheless I still try to remain an optimistic person, otherwise what is the point?
This was my first writing collaboration with Minneapolis singer / songwriter / music veteran John Charles. It is brought to life in classic animation form with a video by Doug Webb. The protagonist has a lot going on in his mind! I can’t quite figure out exactly what! Maybe you can? I need to brush up on my French, German, Greek, Latin, and Spanish. Words and phrases like EGO GENESIS, BLUE MOON, FLOWER TRIP, EGO IMPERATIVE, MORS ULTIMA RATIO, EGO SUM IMMORTALIS, LIBERTAD, ALONE IS ALONE, COGITO ERGO SUM, EUREKA, QUIDAM and DEO GRATIAS pop up over his head with question marks and exclamation points! Angels float by and right in the middle of all of this is MURDER! This guy sure needs to call Dr. Phil ASAP and lay down on the couch big time! I also dig his man boobs and the way his body moves!
Don’t be afraid if you catch yourself singing along to this tune. It won’t take you down to Funky Town or catch you doing The Streak but it may ask you and myself included to take another look at how we see ourselves portrayed to others, our place in this world and how we can make things better! That is the best that any song can do, right? I hope you enjoy the video!
