Dylan & Me Author Louie Kemp to Give Lecture in Duluth
Louie Kemp Returns to Duluth to Give Lecture on His New Book
Dylan & Me: 50 Years of Adventures
He was twelve years old and he had a guitar. He would go around telling everybody that he was going to be a rock-and-roll star. I was eleven and I believed him.” -- Louis Kemp
Duluth, MN -- Duluth native and author of Dylan & Me: 50 Years of Adventures will be in Duluth to give a lecture at Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum on the evening of Thursday, August 15. Hosted by the Duluth Dylan Fest committee, the John Bushey Memorial Encore Lecture with Louie Kemp will give Duluth the opportunity to hear firsthand never-before-heard stories about Bob Dylan.
There will be a Q&A session following. Attendees will be able to meet the author and purchase a personalized autographed copy of his new book several days before the official shipment release date. The public is invited for this exclusive book launch celebration.
The event will begin with a reception featuring music by Gene LaFond and Amy Grillo with guest guitarist Dave Bennett at 5:30 p.m. The lecture will begin at 6:30 p.m. followed by a book signing. Attendees will also have the opportunity to see the William Pagel Archives’ Bob Dylan Exhibit featuring original handwritten lyrics, personal letters and other rare documents.
“The release of Louie Kemp’s Dylan & Me comes right on the heels of Martin Scorsese’s second Bob Dylan documentary focusing on the Rolling Thunder Revue (RTR). Louie Kemp was the producer of that incredible tour,” said Ed Newman, Dylan blogger and Dylan Fest member. “John Bushey spoke frequently about Louie’s book coming out soon, so it’s a fitting tribute to have Louie Kemp deliver this special John Bushey Memorial Encore Lecture.”
The uniquely intimate memoir of a lifelong friendship with Bob Dylan offers never-before-told stories, behind-the-scenes glimpses, rare photos, and affectionate anecdotes about one of the key figures in American music and letters. The cast of characters includes Marlon Brando, Cher, Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, Dennis Hopper and more. Dylan & Me is the ultimate rock-and-roll biography, a "backstage pass" to Louie and Bob's lives, friendships and music by the guy who was there every step of the way.
One special chapter in the book features the night Louie and Bob went to see Buddy Holly and the Winter Dance Party here at the Duluth Armory. The history-shaking events of that night and the days that followed are made fresh again, from a new perspective.

ABOUT THE BOOK
At one time he was just Bobby Zimmerman. That’s how Louie Kemp came to know him in 1953 when they met as kids at Herzl Camp in Northern Wisconsin, each from middle-class Jewish families from Northern Minnesota.
Kemp’s Dylan And Me: 50 Years of Adventures starts there, not in Greenwich Village, nor at Newport, but as kids, with a trove of never-before-told stories that predate the success that both men went on to enjoy -- Louie, having taken over his dad’s fish business, and Zimmerman, who would become the most influential music maker in history.
Kemp’s memoir delivers the goods, underscoring the funny and deeply affectionate history of a five decade-long friendship with its wild adventures, soul-searching conversations, musical milestones, and enduring camaraderie straight on up to the mid-seventies, when Dylan looked to Kemp to produce the now legendary Rolling Thunder Revue, (1975-76).
Featuring the man himself, along with folks like Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, poet Allen Ginsberg, Ronee Blakley, as well as musician/novelist/humorist/politician, Kinky Friedman, who also contributed to Dylan And Me, the tour has been immortalized in a documentary, Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story by Martin Scorsese, which coincided with the pre-sale of Dylan & Me, and premiere on Netflix, as well as in select theatres.
As told to Andy Greene from a recent Rolling Stone story, Kemp says, “This book shows you Dylan’s down-to-earth side. To me, he has always been Bobby Zimmerman and these are all Bobby Zimmerman stories. Bob Dylan is his commercial side. I wanted to show a totally different perspective on him than anyone has ever heard before.”
